Geometric fox and hexagons on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fox head in profile sits at the top of the design, with its tail sweeping down towards the wrist. Thin black linework builds the outline and fur, while shaded fur detail appears on the head and tail. Fine geometric lines, hexagons, circles and dots surround the fox and form a faint structure across the forearm, all in black ink on a plain skin background.

Sit closer, the wind up here likes to listen in. No, not that stone, it has a draught in it. Here. The fox came up the hill the winter the masons walked off the keep, and she came with a knotted measuring cord looped round her neck, because the old lord had nailed a bounty to the gatepost for anyone who could prove his walls true.

Nobody had. The plan his surveyor drew had a flaw in it, a little gap where the lines refused to meet, and the lord's men had been bricking up that gap for three summers without ever closing it. The fox sat on the well-rim and watched the bees go in and out of the broken chapel window, each one flying in a neat six-sided tune, and she thought that if bees could find their way by such shapes, a castle could too.
So she began to draw. She walked the courtyard with her nose low, marking each dot where the old nails had rusted into the flags, each circle where the cistern lids had been, and she joined them with lines of pale dust. By midsummer the whole ruin lay under a web of geometry that only a fox could see from the ground. On the last night she climbed the keep, set her paw on the one stone that sat a finger's width out of true, and the lines lifted off the flagstones like smoke, folding into a small honeycomb that hummed under the moon.
Morning came. The gap in the plan had closed. The lord's cord lay coiled on the step, and beside it, pressed in the dust, was the print of a fox's paw, quite neat, pointing home.
