Geometric wolf head on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf head, angled towards the lower left, is built from faceted planes with dotwork stippling along the ears, cheek and muzzle. Overlapping outline triangles frame the head and extend up and to the right of it. The piece is entirely black and grey, with crisp outlines contrasting against the softer stippled shading on smooth skin.

Dear Ruth,

The last train left Carrow Junction at twenty past nine, and I watched its lamps shrink until the cutting swallowed them. Nobody else was on the platform. The porter has gone home with his dog, and the stationmaster's office has been locked since Thursday, so it is only me and the signal levers, and the wolf.
You will laugh, but there is a wolf living in the waiting room. It came in with the storm on Tuesday, a grey thing with a head cut from slate, and it has been standing under the clock ever since, not moving. Mr Hale swears it is a carving the railway put up for the centenary. I know better. Its ears are built from sharp planes like folded paper, and when the lamp catches it the dots along its muzzle look like frost. It keeps its eyes on the three triangles someone has chalked on the wall behind it, one pointing up, two pointing down, all overlapping like a sum that will not come out.
Last night I finally counted them. There are five triangles if you count the spaces between, and I think that is the answer to the timetable. Every train since the war has run on that sum. Tomorrow I will hand over the box to Pritchard and take the early milk train to you, and I will not look back at the wolf.
Yours, always, Tom
