Geometric fox and turquoise feathers on a hip

Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo

A fox curls its body in a faceted, geometric style, with orange, red and patterned shading on its head and tail. A trail of turquoise feathers with red and yellow outlines sweeps up and around it, with smaller feathers drifting downward. The bold, saturated colours sit on bare skin, with a close crop showing the hip and part of the thigh and an orange top at the upper edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The guard at the Halmi rail crossing does not look at the fox first. He looks at the feathers, turquoise and rust, poking out of the cardboard box on your knee like a bouquet someone forgot to deliver. You tell him they are only paper. That is almost true. Your uncle Teodor cut every one of them from old roofing tin in a shed by the river, and the fox itself is folded from the same sheet, each facet angled so the strip light above the desk throws a dozen small suns across the counter.

Teodor made it the winter the river froze hard enough to walk on. He told you that a fox which crosses a border sheds one feather at every checkpoint, so it can always find its way home by the trail. You thought it was the kind of thing old men say to children who will not sleep. Now there are six feathers gone from the box, and you have stopped counting the ones that have slipped out at the corners of your coat.

The guard lifts the fox by its tail and turns it under the lamp. Its painted face is patterned in faint diamonds, and its curled body flashes orange where the light hits it. He asks what it is for. You say it is for finding the way back. He does not laugh. He tips the box, and a feather slides out onto the counter, then drops over the edge and skitters under the desk. He bends to fetch it, looks at it for a long moment, and presses it into the breast pocket of his jacket. Then he stamps your sheet without raising his eyes.

Outside, the platform is wet with sleet. You walk to the far end, where the lights stop, and drop the last feathers one by one onto the concrete. Behind you the fox rides in the box with its tail tucked under its chin, and the trail you have left shines faintly in the dark, leading back the way you came.
