Geometric fox on the ribs

Geometric · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A small seated fox in faceted, geometric shapes sits on the side of the ribcage, with the arm raised beside it. The fox is outlined in black at the ears, legs and some panels, and its body is built from overlapping orange, red, pink and peach blocks. Colour ink dominates and the tattoo sits centrally on the image against soft, plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last loom on the Tarn Ridge had gone quiet the winter the fox first came down the scree, sitting on its haunches as though it had been waiting for someone to notice it. Mara Oddie noticed because she was carrying the water up, and because the fox did not run when she set the yoke down. It watched her with its head at a slant, its panels catching the low sun, and she saw that its body was made of flat blocks of colour fitted together like a broken window, pink where the light was thin and rust where it was thick.

The village people said the fox was a debt. Their grandmothers had sold the old hydro sluices to a man from the coast for seed and salt, and he had promised a fox-shaped engine to watch the dams. Nobody had seen the engine since. Mara carried the fox home in a sack, and it rode on her hip without complaint, and every dusk after that it sat on the sill and turned its black-edged ears toward the valley where the lights had once been.

When the drought came in the ninth summer, the cisterns cracked and the well in the square drew nothing but grit. Mara went to the sill and asked the fox what it wanted. It stood, shook off its panels like leaves, and walked out into the dust. She followed with the bucket. Where each block of colour touched the ground, a seam of water welled up and ran into the rock, clear as glass, and the valley filled with the sound of it.

The coast man never came back to collect. The village still leaves the sill empty at dusk, because the fox left one thing behind: a single peach-coloured panel set into the lintel above the well, warm to the touch even at night. Children press their palms against it before they drink.
