Stylised fox head on a leg
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A stylised fox head faces right, built from overlapping curved shapes in orange, red, pink and beige. Teal lines outline the head, and the eye and nose are rendered in simplified, graphic forms. Bold colour fills the design against the skin, and the tattoo sits on a limb with a plain pavement background.

He moved like a man who had learnt the quickstep from a gramophone in a cellar, all sharp turns and sudden stops. The spotlights threw teal and rust across the floor, and each time they swung past his face, his eyes caught the light and held it a moment too long. He told her he kept a paint shop down on the lower promenade, where the gulls nested in the awnings, and that he only ever mixed colours that had been asked for. She asked him for orange. He laughed, a short bark that made the drummer look up.
At midnight the lights went down and the band packed away its cases. The fox stopped at the side door, turned his narrow head towards her, and said nothing at all. She followed him out onto the front. The frost had come early, and in the shelter by the pier there were four small prints pressed into the white, leading away up the hill towards the cliffs.
She went home by the long road and found a single orange hair caught on the clasp of her handbag, bright as a struck match. In the morning, her windowsill was crusted with frost, and the prints had come right up to the glass.
