Geometric orange fox on the thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A fox sits upright with its large bushy tail curling round below it, drawn from angular, faceted panels of orange, red and yellow. Black lines define the legs and the tail tip, while the fox's chest and face are picked out in lighter pale tones. The tattoo sits on the side of a thigh against plain skin, with a white towel visible at the left edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hens had been quiet since midnight, which was the first thing Ruth noticed when she pulled her boots on in the dark. Quiet hens meant something was sitting too still beyond the wire. She took the torch from its nail by the back door and crossed the yard with frost cracking under every step, the sky above the Calder barn going the colour of cold ash.

The fox was on the top rail of the paddock gate, upright as a clerk, its tail wrapped round its feet like a scarf. The torchlight broke it into facets: a slab of rust here, a wedge of butter-yellow there, a dark line down each leg where the frost had nothing to grip. It did not run. It regarded her the way the vicar regarded the collection plate, as if she owed it something and it was too polite to say what.

Her father had shot foxes in that field, and her grandmother had left out scraps for them, and Ruth had never decided which of them was right. She set the torch on the fence post and counted the hens by sound instead. Eleven. Twelve, with the speckled one that always hid under the water trough. Nothing was missing but a single brown egg, lying whole on the gatepost, untouched by any beak.

When she looked up the fox was gone. In the snow by the gate ran a line of prints going in and out of the field with no break between them, and only at the very end did they stop in a neat round dent, as if something had been set down and carefully lifted away. Ruth picked up the egg, still warm, and carried it back inside without telling anyone.
