A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox had sat on the lock beam since before the ice went out, upright as a fence post, its tail curled round its feet like a dropped scarf. Mrs Oddie at the lock cottage left it bread crusts and told the bargemen it was a sign of good luck. Her husband called it a nuisance and swept the crusts into the cut.

In March the narrowboat Marigold came down the cut with a boy aboard who had walked out of a farm up the valley. His boots were split and his hands were red. He asked Mr Oddie for work and was told there was none. The fox turned its head towards the boy, then turned it back to the water, as though the matter had been settled somewhere else.

That night the river rose and the lower gate jammed fast. Mr Oddie went out with a lamp and found the boy already in the black water to his waist, heaving at the paddle with his shoulder. The fox sat on the beam above them, not helping, only watching where the old timber groaned. When the gate finally swung free, the boy was given a bunk in the cottage and the crusts were never swept into the cut again.

By midsummer the beam was empty. The boy said the fox had crossed the lock in a single leap and had not looked back, which Mrs Oddie said was the only proper way to leave a place.
