Mara Ellery had been surveying the ridge for three weeks when the wolf first answered her. She sat on the tailgate of the county van with her protractor and a flask of cold tea, plotting the old timber line against the moon that hung above Cold Harbour Fell. The pines stood in their jagged rows, each one a sharp fold of the hillside, and she had drawn them as triangles because triangles were what the paper wanted.

The howl came from the scree below, low and then rising, and it bent the sound of her pencil into something tight. She had read the parish records that week. A stone wall had been built in 1791 to keep wolves off the sheep, and the wolves had gone anyway, sliding through the gaps the way water finds a crack. Her grandfather used to say animals did not care for walls. He had also said the moon was a clock nobody had wound.

She set the compass down and waited. The second howl was closer, and she understood it was not asking anything. It was measuring. She ran her finger along the ridge on the map, then along the real ridge, and for the first time the two agreed. The wolf had been walking the contour all along, the same path she had been drawing, in the same careful lines.

In the morning she rolled up the survey and left the wall blank. Where the boundary ran, she drew a single dotted line, and beside it, in small neat capitals, she wrote: GO AROUND. The sheep were already on the far side of the fell when the sun came up.
