Mountain and pine landscape designs
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
Two side by side designs show mountain ranges with pine trees along the base. The left design sits in a half circle with a stippled sky, two dots that could be moons or suns, and a dotted shadow beneath the peaks. The right design sits in a diamond, with a rayed sun above a snow-capped peak, a river running through a forest and reeds at the edges. Both are drawn in black ink on white paper, using stippling for shading and parallel hatching for the mountain faces and water.

The ink in the bottle had thickened again by the time Hollis Wray set down his pen, so he stood it in a saucer of hot water and waited for it to loosen. Mrs Calder wanted two plates for the parlour at Glenhurst, one drawn at the hour the sun left the peaks and one at the hour it returned. Hollis had walked that valley three summers with a chain and a compass. He knew the river bent twice before the reeds, and that the pines stood thickest where the old shepherd's cairn had fallen in.

On the first plate he set the moon low over the ridge, a pinprick he dabbed with the very tip of the nib. On the second he gave the sun a ring of rays so fine they nearly bled into the paper. The shadow beneath the peaks took him three evenings of stippling, dot by dot, until his thumb ached and the light in the window went grey. He told himself it was only shading.
When the plates were framed, Mrs Calder leaned close and asked about the small dark spot above the first summit, the one that sat apart from the moon. Hollis looked at it for a long while. He had made it the night his brother failed to come down the pass, meaning to rub it out in the morning, and then the morning had come and he had left it.
"A bird," he said. She hung the plates anyway, facing each other across the stair, so that the sun and the moon never once appeared in the same room.
