Geometric iceberg diamond on a calf

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond outline frames a faceted iceberg, with a solid peak above the waterline and a dotted, shaded base below. Thin triangles and circles sit above and below the diamond, linking it to the rest of the design. The image is black and grey against a dark background, with the tattoo photographed straight on and filling most of the frame.

The ice on the north side of the Hallam Sound was never where the charts put it, and Agnes Riddell had been told as much by three captains before she was allowed aboard. She carried a theodolite in a case lined with green baize, a ledger bound in oilcloth, and a set of brass compasses wrapped in her spare stockings. Her task was to fix the berg the crew called the Diamond, which had drifted in the same grey wedge of water for eleven weeks.

Its shape made sense only from above. The peak rose clean and white, a sharp triangle lifting from the sea, but the base hung beneath the surface like a cut stone, its facets dimmed by the current and stippled where the swell had pitted it. Each morning she sketched it from the bow, ruling a diamond in pencil around the outline, then two triangles above and below to mark the sun's track and the tide. No two sketches agreed. The berg had turned a few degrees every night, as if it were reading the sky.

On the twelfth morning the diamond was gone. In its place lay a flat fog, and when the wind tore a gap in it she saw the water pale with broken rime. She recorded the bearing, the hour and the temperature, then wrote nothing for a long while, the ledger open on her knee. Eventually she drew the outline again from memory: a diamond, a circle above for the sun, a circle below for the hidden keel. Her hand had made the lines exact.

The captain asked her later what the berg had been. She said it had been a fixed point, which was the only honest thing a surveyor could say about anything. She sent the sketch to the Admiralty with the coordinates, and beneath the diamond she wrote: position held until the ice chose otherwise.
