Geometric line tattoo with a white kitten

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a geometric tattoo in black linework, showing a faceted shape built from triangles and straight lines that radiate from a central point. A white kitten with one blue eye lies on white bedding and rests its paw and muzzle against the skin beside the design. The palette is neutral, with the black ink, pale skin and white bedding creating a soft, uncluttered composition.

The lens had come over from Marseille in forty-one crates, and the kitten arrived in the thirty-ninth, or so Ada's father swore after he found it asleep among the packing straw. It was white as sea fog, with one eye the colour of tea and one the pale blue of the glass itself. Within a week it followed the turning light with its whole body, rolling over on the flagstones each time the great prism swept past the window.

Every Tuesday Ada cleaned the lens with vinegar and a chamois, working from the centre outward along the rings of prisms, because a smear on one facet bent the beam a degree off true, and a degree at sea was a mile of black water by morning. The kitten sat on the iron rail above her and watched her hands. It had no interest in the brass or the clockwork. It only wanted the coins of light that fell across the floor when the sun came low, and it pounced on them as if they were moths.

In the October fog the lamp failed at dusk. Her father was in bed with his chest, so Ada climbed the one hundred and twelve steps alone with a candle in a jar, and found the spare mantle had been knocked from its hook. The kitten was there before her, sitting at the very centre of the lens where every ring of glass pointed inward. When she lifted it away, its blue eye caught the candle and threw a bright pinprick back at her, and she understood that all the thousands of facets had been aimed at that single point the whole time.

The fishing boats came in by the second bell. In the logbook, under the weather, Ada wrote: lamp restored, fog to the east, cat on the lens. Her father read it at breakfast and did not strike the last line out.
