Traditional-style tattoos of an eye, a bearded face with a flower and lettering on a thigh, with a white kitten in the foreground.

White kitten in front of traditional tattoos on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A white kitten with dark eyes sits in front of a leg covered in tattoos, with its paws wrapped around a finger held up by a hand. The tattoos include an eye with rays, a bearded face with a red flower beneath it, and partly visible lettering, all with bold black outlines. The ink is mostly black and grey with touches of red and green, and the close-up composition places the tattoos at the edges of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

You will not believe what the cat did on Tuesday. Mr Gilroy from the council came up the field with his clipboard and his good shoes, looking at the big top as if it had personally let him down, and Pickles, that white kitten we took in from the rain in Leeds, climbed onto the ticket table, sat square in front of him and lifted one paw straight up at his face. Gilroy went red to the collar. I laughed so hard I had to sit down on a crate of programmes.

We are down to four acts now. The lion went to a sanctuary in Wales in April, and the high wire was sold for scrap in June. Old Harold still paints the eye over the entrance every morning, the one with the rays coming off it, though nobody remembers who first asked for it. He says it keeps the bank away. It hasn't. The bearded fellow he painted on the wagon door has faded so badly that the children think he is a ghost, which Harold takes as a compliment.

The notice came Friday. The field lease ends in October and the council wants the ground back for flats. Pickles sat on the notice for an hour and would not move, so we have decided it is legally binding in a different sense.

So we go on the road in October, cat included, to whatever towns will still have us. Harold says he will repaint the bearded fellow on the side of the caravan so people know where to find us. I told him the cat should get top billing. Write soon, and tell Mum I've stopped smoking. It's a lie, but a kind one.

Love, Bea
