Grey cat portrait tattoo on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic tattoo of a cat's face, shown in head-on angle with a tilted muzzle and detailed fur, sits on the upper thigh. The shading uses soft grey tones with darker accents around the eye and ears. A real orange tabby cat lies beside the leg on a floral bedspread, and the photo was taken at home with natural light from a window.

The master wanted the cat grey because the cat in his house was grey, and I told him soot would not hold on lime plaster the way ochre does. He said the dead do not mind fading, only the living do, and he paid me two loaves and a jar of fig oil to stop arguing. So I ground the soot with gum and sat before the wall with my reeds laid out in a row like fish bones.

The cat would not sit for me. It slept across the scribe's sandals and woke only when I reached for the lamp, then turned its head low and sideways, one ear folded flat, watching me the way a tax man watches a debtor. I learned it in pieces. The dark ring around the eye took three mornings. The ears I left until last, feathering each edge with a brush of goat hair until the fur seemed to lift in the draught from the door.

When the mistress died in the hot month, her son came with a mallet and said the cat had to go, that a painted animal would call the living one to the tomb and it would starve there. I did not argue. That night I went back to the wall with the last of the soot and gave the cat its eyes open, looking up, its muzzle tipped as if it had heard its name called from the kitchen.

In the morning the son stood in front of it a long time. Then he left the mallet on the step and told me to finish the bedspread instead, the pink flowers he had always liked best. I painted them the colour of crushed wine and walked home to my own cat, who was orange, and who did not care in the least what the dead wanted.
