Lotus mandala underbust tattoo
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of an open lotus flower sits at the centre of a symmetrical mandala-style design across the underbust. The fine linework and stippled dots build up shading in the petals and the scalloped border, with dotted tassel-like lines hanging from the lower edge. The design is framed by bare skin and a grey t-shirt lifted at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ashvin had been stippling the same lotus for nine days, and the bronze bowl still looked like a bowl. His master, Gopal, leaned over the bench and tapped the rim with a fingernail. "Your dots are too even. A lotus is not a sum. It opens unevenly, like someone waking."

Ashvin wiped his punch on his sleeve and tried again, letting the hand wander. The pattern radiated from the bowl's floor: first the tight central bud, then the petals fanning in pairs, then the scalloped border that the traders in the lower bazaar called the sea. He had stopped listening to them long ago. What he could not stop hearing was the bell of the river ferry at dusk, which rang twice whenever the water rose.
On the tenth morning the flood came early and the workshop filled with the smell of wet clay. Gopal did not look up from his anvil. He pushed a cloth bundle across the bench. Inside lay a stamp of cut walnut, the lotus carved in relief, its lower edge dotted and tasselled.
"Mine," Gopal said. "My master's. Yours now, if your hand stops shaking."
Ashvin pressed the stamp into soft gold leaf and lifted it away. The flower came up whole, every petal in its place, the dotted tassels hanging like rain from the rim. He understood then that the mistake had never been his dots. He had been trying to make them perfect, when the lotus only ever needed to be repeated, and repeated true.
