Black and grey dotwork mandala tattoo with layered petals and a star-like centre, shown on the inner forearm.

Mandala tattoo on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large mandala fills the forearm, built from layered petal shapes radiating outward from a pale central circle with an eight-pointed star. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded with stippled dots that create soft gradients from dark to light. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a pale, grid-patterned screen, with the wearer's denim jeans and top partly visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mason's boy had been sent up to the broken chapel at Harrowgate for three winters running, and still the window would not come right. The old builders had set a great round window above the altar, and when the castle fell the glass went with the lead, leaving only the stone wheel of it, petals cut sharp against the sky. Folk said the wheel was a flower that had been told to stop growing.

Then he noticed the centre: a ring of stone with eight points at its heart, like a star somebody had pressed into wet clay. Every spring he climbed up with his chisel and tried to cut the missing petals back in, and every spring the frost lifted his work off the stone by the width of a thumb. His mother said he was trying to finish something that had been finished already, only by people who were dead.

On the last day of the thaw he sat in the nave with his back against a cold pillar and counted dots. Each petal was made of small pricks, dark at the rim and pale toward the heart, and he saw that the stone itself had been pricked that way by hands that knew the stone would weather. The light came through the empty wheel and laid eight spokes across the floor.

He stopped trying to mend it. He went down to the village and told the widow who kept the bell that the window was whole, and she asked how he could know. He said he had counted it, and the number was right.
