Geometric owl in flight design

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of a horned owl in flight, with wings fully spread and talons visible below the body. The feathers and face are filled with dense geometric patterns of chevrons, triangles, fine hatching and concentric shapes. The work is in black ink on a cream sheet, with no shading or colour, and the owl fills most of the frame against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl had roosted in the lantern room three nights before Ada thought to count its feathers. She counted them the way her father had counted the tide, pen in hand, marking each chevron and fan of primaries until the lamp needed trimming. The bird watched her from the brass rail with eyes like struck coins. When the great lens turned, the beam swept across its spread wings and threw their pattern over the whitewashed wall in shapes no keeper had ever logged.

Her father had kept the light on Scarrow Head for thirty-one years and trusted only the barometer, the almanac and the sea. When the gale took him off the steps in February, he left a ledger full of hatched lines, triangles and rings, which he called the tide's handwriting. Ada had always thought it madness. Now she laid the ledger beside her sketch and saw that the owl's wing held the same nested arcs he had drawn for the spring flood.

On the fourth night the wind dropped and the owl lifted off the rail without a sound. Ada climbed to the gallery and watched it cross the black water, wings fully open, the lamp catching each dark feather until it was only lines against the stars. She went back down, wrote the hour in the ledger, and drew the owl beneath her father's last entry, so that his tide and its wings sat together on the page.
