Black and grey geometric owl tattoo with a dotted face and triangular body, placed on the calf.

Geometric owl on a lower leg

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A front-facing owl is built from straight lines, triangles and angular panels, with a stippled dotwork face and eyes. The linework is bold and solid black, with fine lines and dot patterns adding detail within the body. The design is centred on a lower leg and uses only black ink and grey tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the last week of August the Discovery trees were dropping faster than Dad could sell them, and the wasps had found the windfalls before we did. I sat on the tailgate at dusk with a torch I wasn't using, counting rows the way Dad had taught me, corner to corner, until the numbers went soft.

The barn owl came over the top wall on the third evening, pale as a dropped napkin, and settled on the gatepost as if it had been booked. Dad always said she kept the mice off the Bramleys. I never argued, though I had never once seen a mouse in that orchard that wasn't already half eaten.

Mr Ansell, who planted the place in 1952, drew the whole orchard on squared paper with triangles in the margins. He said a tree set on a triangle would never be blown flat by a wind from one side. The ledger is still in the cabinet in the packing shed, and the owl he sketched beside the figures has the same angled panels down its breast and the same dotted face, like frost on a pane.

On the Saturday I climbed the ladder to the top rung and found her there, staring straight at me with those round, stippled eyes. I told her the Bramleys were ready. She didn't move. Then she lifted, cut sideways across the rows, and dropped behind the wall, and I went down to fetch the crates.
