Geometric owl on a lower leg
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A front-facing owl with large round eyes, a small beak and a symmetrical body built from triangles and fine radiating lines. The face and wing edges are shaded with stippled dots, while the body uses solid black triangles and bold outlines. The tattoo is in black and grey, centred on a pale lower leg against a soft grey background.

Dear Tom,

The owl has been back on the headframe every night since the shift changed. Mrs Pritchard says it is the same bird that sat over the Ashworth shaft the winter before the roof came down, and I told her that is nonsense, owls do not keep count of men. But I have been sitting at the back window with the lamp turned low, and I have watched it sit with its round face turned to the wheel, quite still, the way your father used to sit with his tea going cold while he waited for the buzzer.
The lamp-room man, Eddie Lowe, says the birds come for the warm breath off the ventilation shaft, and the mice come for the spilt grain from the pony stables, and so the birds follow the mice. It sounds tidy when he says it. He has a way of making things tidy so the rest of us can get to sleep. I asked him what the owl is watching for, and he laughed, and then he did not.
Here is what I did. I counted the lamps as they went down, the way you showed me, every one with its tin tag. Forty-one went down. Forty-one came up at the change, and I counted them twice. I have not told anyone that the owl turned its head when the last one reached the cage, and I am not going to tell Mrs Pritchard either.
Come home at Easter if they let you. Bring the brass tag, I want to see if it still has the number on it.
Your loving mam, Nessa
