Geometric shapes and shell on upper arm and forearm

Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows two angles of a sleeve-style tattoo on an arm, with a dark, ribbed shell-like form at the centre and fine radiating lines fanning out above it. Overlapping circles, triangles and blocks of teal, blue and ochre sit below, with stippled dots scattered around the edges. The composition is set against a plain dark background, with the forearm and upper arm both visible.

The lens had been cracked since March, and Ada spent the first hour of the night wiping salt from the brass while the wind leaned on the gallery rail. Her father had always said the lamp turned slower in bad weather, though she had never managed to prove it against the clock. Below, the sea broke over the skerry in scattered white dots that the beam caught and lost.

On the sill of the watch room sat the shell he had brought back from the spring tide, a whorled thing as dark as wet slate, ribbed like a fan. He had kept it beside the chart of Hennick Sound, where the soundings were written in pencil in three different hands. Ada had not touched it since the funeral. Tonight she picked it up and turned it until the ridges caught the lamplight and threw thin lines across the plaster, fanning out the way the bearings fanned across the chart.

She understood then what the lines were for. He had ruled a line for each safe passage, drawn a circle around each danger, and shaded the shallows in blocks of green and ochre so a man in a small boat could read the water at a glance. Ada took the pencil from the drawer and ruled a new line from the shell toward the open dark, a bearing for nobody in particular.

At four the lamp steadied. A boat's light answered from the east, hesitant and then sure, and Ada rang the bell twice to tell it the channel was still there. She left the shell on the sill where the beam could find it on every turn.
