Geometric shark head with red lettering on thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A faceted, geometric shark head is tattooed on the outer thigh, built from overlapping triangles and planes shaded in black and grey. Red linework forms the teeth and streaks across the upper jaw, and red lettering that appears to read "FREE INSIDE" sits beneath the design. The composition fills the frame, with the thigh's curve visible behind the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The lane closed on Tuesday and the drifts have reached the second step of the stables, so you'll forgive the smudges. We have eleven in the house: two coachmen, a widow from Hexham with a parrot in a cage, and Mr Ashby, the glazier, who has spent three days cutting the same shark out of a pane of red-flashed glass he carried in his valise. He works with a wheel and a wet cloth, and the shavings fall on the flagstones like sugar.
Yesterday he showed me the piece. It is a head, all planes and triangles, the jaw hinged so the light comes through the teeth in little red stitches. He said sharks are only ever truly themselves from the inside, which I took for glazier's nonsense until he tilted the thing and the whole back wall of the taproom bled crimson. The widow crossed herself and asked for brandy.
Sitting in the window now, I can see the glass shark hanging from the beam where he tied it. He has written on the underside in red paint, in capitals that will not dry straight: FREE INSIDE. I asked whether he meant the fish or himself. He only said the snow would stop by Thursday, and that someone would have to come up the road with a cart.
Love to Mother. Keep your boots dry, and if the Anna May sails before the thaw, do not let them put you on the galley.
Your sister, Maud
