Geometric skull and all-seeing eye on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A photograph of a large tattoo on the outer thigh, with a dark garment visible above. The composition includes a wireframe cube and octahedron, an eye inside a compass, a stippled skull, a crescent moon with small stars in pale lavender, and a red-brown sunburst. The linework is fine and mostly black, with dotted shading around the skull and a few lavender and red accents.

The fair came to Harrowgate Common the week after the moon went thin, and with it came a man called Ambrose Quill who sold nothing but drawings. He kept them in a tin trunk painted with stars. Each one was numbered, and each one showed a shape that could not quite be held, a cage of wire that turned inside itself when you looked away.

A girl named Tamsin Hale paid him a penny to see Fig 7. He unrolled a sheet of paper and set a brass compass on it. The needle pointed at nothing. Beneath the compass a small eye opened, and the eye looked at her and asked how many sides a thing had when nobody had counted them. She said six, then eight, then said she did not know.
Quill laughed and said that was the trouble with honest people. He told her the skull in the corner had counted everything once and then gone quiet about it. The dust stippled round its jaw was the last of its arithmetic, he said, and he blew it off the paper into the lamplight. When the fair packed up that night, Tamsin found the sheet folded inside her coat, and the cube on it had shifted by one corner.
She kept it until the autumn. Each morning the sun rose on the page in red lines, and each night the moon sat beside it with its small stars. She never found Ambrose Quill again, but she learned to count slowly, and to leave one corner of every room unmeasured.
