Sketchy triangle outline on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single equilateral triangle is drawn in black ink on pale skin, with a thick outer line and a thinner, broken inner line that gives a sketched, hand-drawn effect. The shading is solid black with no greys within the triangle, which is left unfilled. The triangle sits centrally in the frame on the inner forearm, with dark leather filling the background.

You are sixteen days out from Lisbon when the chief mate hands you a pencil and says, mark the sights. Three bearings, taken a few minutes apart: the church tower on the headland, the lamp at the harbour mouth, and the grey mast of a fishing boat you will never see again. Draw a line from each point and see where they meet. The swell is working the chart table like a cradle, and your hand wobbles on the second line.

They do not meet. Instead they close a small triangle on the paper, a cocked hat, the mate calls it, and you stare at it as though it might resolve if you look hard enough. You redraw the lines with a sharper nib, then again. The outline comes out heavy where you pressed and broken where the pencil skipped over the grain of the paper, so it looks sketched by someone who is not yet sure of the shape.
The mate taps the empty middle with his thumbnail. The true position is in there somewhere, he says, never on the line itself. Every sight carries its error, and you have drawn all of yours honestly. Take the centre of the hat as your best guess and steer for it.
You leave the middle white, the way the chart is always left. At noon the cloud tears open and you take a fourth sight, and it falls inside the triangle, close enough to the centre that you stop checking the figures. You write the time in the log, initial it, and go below for your tea.
