Geometric stag head on a wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black stag head is drawn from angular, faceted facets with straight lines and no shading, and its antlers branch outward and upward. The tattoo sits on pale skin on the inner wrist and forearm, with the head centred in the frame. The background is a soft-focus grey wall with a picture frame edge, which keeps attention on the design.

Bay Four had been quiet since midnight, which is how I knew Mr Alder was awake. He never rang the buzzer. He just folded things. By the time I wheeled the obs trolley past his curtain he had made a crane from a menu and a frog from a blood pressure chart, and he was working on something with his thin hands that he would not let me see.

'Give it here,' I said, because the healthcare assistant on Ward 7 has to pretend she has a system. He laughed and held up a square of black card folded so many times it had gone soft as cloth. Under his thumbs it opened into a stag, all hard angles, the head a dark diamond, the antlers spreading upward like the branches of a winter ash. Every fold was a straight line. There was no curve anywhere, and still it looked like it was listening.
'My wife taught me that,' he said, 'before my hands went.' He did not say where she was now, and I did not ask. He pressed the stag flat against the blanket and told me to keep it until morning, when they would discharge him to a home with a view of the car park. I said I would. I put it in my tunic pocket, where it knocked against my hip for the rest of the shift.
At seven the day sister found me in the sluice doing the controlled drugs count and asked what I was grinning at. Bay Four was empty. The bed was made as tight as a fold, and on the pillow, where his head had been, sat a second stag, smaller, cut from the same black card. I took the first one out of my pocket and set the two side by side on the sill, where the early light came through the glass and caught every edge at once.
