Geometric swan on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework swan with wings raised is built from straight angular lines, forming faceted geometric panels across the body and neck. The tattoo sits on the outer thigh of a person wearing a navy dress with small orange and white print, and the skin shows no visible shading or colour. The composition is centred on the thigh with plain pale background at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Calder had been trying for three days to fix the swan with his theodolite, and the bird would not hold still for him. It stood on the Skerry flats where the tide had left a sheet of shallow water, neck bent, wings lifted as though it had paused halfway through a sentence. Each time he sighted it, the creature had shifted a degree, so he gave up on the soft curves of its body and began drawing it the only way his instruments allowed, in straight lines from one bearing to the next.

Mrs Ruadh at the post office laughed when she saw the sheet. 'Swans don't keep still for surveyors,' she said, running a thumb along a ridge he had inked. 'You draw them as they landed, then leave them be.' He thought she was teasing him until that evening, when the wind swung round and the reeds along the causeway bent together, their edges sharpening into points that caught the last of the light. He counted eleven facets before the dark took them.

At low water he walked out with the chart folded inside his coat. The swan had gone, but where it had stood the mud held its outline, every wing feather a clean ridge pressed flat and every joint a sharp corner. He traced it with his heel, line after line, until the flood came sliding in over the edges and filled each angle with grey water.

In the morning he copied the bearings onto the chart in clean black ink. Beside the flats he wrote a single note, bird not recorded, and then, after some thought, drew one more line from the corner of the page to the edge of the sea, so that anyone who followed it would arrive at the place the swan had stood.
