Geometric symbol and lorem ipsum text on a wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black geometric symbol made of a triangle, a square and fine intersecting lines, with small circles at its base and top, sits on the inner wrist. Beneath it, the placeholder text "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is set in a plain serif lettering in the same black ink. The soft, out-of-focus background and the neutral skin tones keep attention on the tattoo.

The sluice at Harrow Weir had not turned in forty winters, and the river had begun to climb the steps of the mill town on its own account. Old Ansel Quay carried the measuring square down to the water each morning, the brass triangle hung from its point the way his father had shown him. He did not hurry, because the village had learned that hurrying a level only made it lie.

On the back of the square, beneath the small circles, the makers had left a line of marks that the children copied into the mud and never read. Lorem ipsum, they chanted, dolor sit amet, like a skipping rhyme. Mira, Ansel's granddaughter, asked him once what it meant. He said the makers had set those words to hold a place for a thing not yet written, the way a mason leaves a gap in the wall for a door he has not hung yet.
The spring the river rose past the third step, Mira took the square to the weir alone. She found the point where the lines crossed at the heart of the figure, turned the brass wheel until the point sat level with the water, and waited. The gate groaned on its chain. The river drew back from the steps like a dog called to heel, and the mill town slept dry that night.
In the morning the people came down to see, and Mira cut a fresh notch beside the old ones in the sluice stone. She left the space after it empty. When they asked her why, she told them that a placeholder was only honest if someone kept checking whether it had been filled, and that the river did not care which of them did the work.
