Deathly Hallows and 9¾ wrist tattoo

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a fine line tattoo on the inside of a wrist, set against a patterned blanket. The design stacks an N with an infinity sign, the numerals 9 and ¾, and a circle-and-triangle Deathly Hallows symbol beneath them. The linework is thin and even, and the image is black and grey, with soft natural lighting.

The hall smelled of floor polish and the same cheap squash we drank at fourteen, and within ten minutes Dougie Pryce had told me twice that he still had his blazer. I nodded in the right places. Niamh's name was on the table plan with a question mark beside it, which was about right for her.

We made a pact the summer before we left, the three of us, on the bench outside Ashworth Road station where the buses wait. We folded our ticket stubs small and pushed them into the gap behind the lost-property hatch. Nine and three-quarters, we wrote, because we thought ourselves very clever. Under it went a circle with a line through it, a triangle inside, an N for Niamh, and a sideways eight for for ever. Niamh said the eight was a lie, since nothing lasted except the bus timetable, and then she drew it again anyway, bigger.

The reunion finished at nine. I walked back down the hill with my coat open and found the hatch gone, replaced by a new one painted the same mustard green. A clerk I didn't know looked up from his crossword and asked if I was here about lost property. I said I was here about a ticket I'd left in 2004. He didn't laugh. He slid a grey envelope under the glass with my name spelled properly, and inside, in Niamh's round capitals, was one line: Platform's at the end, same as always. Don't be late.

I stood there a long while. Then I took a ticket from my purse, folded it small, and pushed it into the gap behind the hatch, with the same circle, triangle, N and sideways eight. Somebody will find it one day and wonder who was so sure of the timetable.
