Geometric triangle design sketch with words

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink drawing on a white notebook page shows a large nested triangle outline with dotted accents and hatched lines. Beside it are six handwritten words, Explore, Challenge, Transcend, Express, Create and Learn, each paired with a small triangle motif. The linework is fine and even, and the photo is taken at an angle over a cream textured blanket.

Rain got into the field book faster than the ink could dry, so Hester Vaughan worked under her coat with the page pinned flat by a stone. Three stations, she had written, and beneath them the spire of St Bega's stood on the far fell like a pencil point, its angle to the nearest cairn still unsettled. She had drawn the triangle four times. Each time the third corner slid a few inches toward the wrong parish, the way a cart slides on wet clay.

Tomas had written the words in the back of the book the spring he came to carry her chain. Explore, challenge, transcend, he had printed, then express, create and learn, each beside a little triangle he said was a bit of a joke. She had let him keep them there. Now she turned to them as if they were a second set of instructions, and the joke began to look like a method.

It was the inner triangle that was wrong, not the outer. She had nested one figure inside the other to correct for the slope, and the correction had been stacked on a reading taken before the wind shifted. She rubbed the old line out with her thumb until the paper pilled, then drew it again from the cairn outward, slowly, counting the dotted marks where the bearings crossed.

When the sum closed to within a hair, she sat back and found the rain had stopped. Tomas was at the bottom of the hill with the chain over his shoulder, lifting one arm to ask if they were done. She drew the last small triangle beside Learn, then turned to a clean page, because the spire was still standing in the notebook and she did not yet know where it would fall.
