The Majestic's sprung floor still holds the day's heat when you start sweeping, and the last confetti clings to your shoes as if it has opinions about leaving. Someone has forgotten three arrows on the stage beside the piano, their shafts hooked over a music stand, feathers painted in tight diamonds and scrolls by the Ashworth boys from the archery club. Nobody claims them. Mr Clegg says the club can fetch them on Monday.

You are the one who can't leave the dancing alone. The trumpet player counts you in for one more foxtrot, and you take the broom as a partner and go round the empty hall, spinning past the bar where the lamps have been turned low. Through the high windows the tide is out beyond the promenade, the sand grey and shining like a drawing someone has half rubbed away with their thumb.

When you come back to the stage, the arrows have shifted. The top one points at the cloakroom, the middle one at the fire door, and the bottom one straight at you, though you know a feather cannot turn itself. You lift it down. The varnish on its painted vanes is still tacky, and under the stage light you see a name scratched into the shaft: Eileen, 1936, and beneath it a date that is tomorrow.

You take the one pointing at the door, because the trumpet has stopped and the night is open. You leave the other two where they are, aimed at whoever comes next.
