Geometric triangle line tattoo on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A man in a black sleeveless top and dark jeans stands in front of a grey door, with his face cropped out of the frame. A single thin black line runs down the outer upper arm from the shoulder, with small triangles branching off it at the shoulder, the elbow and the forearm. The design is in solid black ink on pale skin, set against the plain grey background.

Hauled the theodolite up the embankment before the 7.40 came through, and the porter at Carlisle Junction swore I'd be killed under it. I wasn't. Mr Haddow wants the sight line from the water tower to the new signal box squared before the frost sets in, and he wants no more than a finger's breadth of error, which in my experience means he has never stood in a cutting in a northerly wind.

The line runs true from the tower past the goods shed. Where it meets the platform edge I drove the first peg and scored a small triangle into the cinder to mark the bench. Three of them, one at each rise in the ground: the level crossing, the bridge abutment, and the bottom of the cutting where rainwater sits black as ink. Haddow said a survey wants no ornament. I told him the gangers would read the triangles faster than his plan, and he said that was precisely what worried him.
Tonight, in the lamp room, I found young Tomas asleep against the levers with his cap over his face. The chalk line we'd laid across the floor had been scuffed out at the bend where the signal wire turns, and he had taken the trouble to redraw it, a little crooked, with the triangles copied in beside it. I left the lamp burning and wrote the pegs on the back of my cuff so I would not lose them.
In the morning the frost had taken the chalk, but the triangles were still in the cinder, and the first train of the day ran down the true line without a jolt.
