Fine line curve tattoo on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a minimal tattoo of a single thin black line running down the upper arm, with a separate curved line below it that forms a simple outline. The linework is crisp and unshaded, with no fill or shading. The image is black and white and framed from the shoulder to the chest, with the face cropped out apart from the lips and chin.

Dear Nell,

The arch came down on Tuesday, all of it at once, the way old mortar gives up when it has been waiting for someone to notice. Mr Ashdown says we have until Friday to get the curve of it back on paper, so I have been lying on planks in the north bailey with a chalk line and a tin of plumb weights, trying to find where the springing point really was. The castle was built by men who did not believe in straight lines. Everything bends a little, as if it is listening.
Yesterday I dropped the plumb line from the broken keystone and it ran down past the wall as true as a razor. Beside it, the curve of the arch lay in the dirt like the shoulder of a sleeping dog. I drew both on the back of a feed sack: one line standing, one curve leaning, and between them a gap that I can only call a door.
Ashdown looked at the sketch for a long time and then said the arch was never meant to hold the wall up. It was meant to frame the view of the river from the chapel steps. So the curve was for looking, and the line was for keeping us honest. I have decided to believe him.
Tomorrow I will hang the weight from the last standing corner and measure the drop. If it still reads true, I will cut the first stone for the new arch myself. Come up on the train at the weekend and I will show you the feed sack. Bring your good boots, the nettles have taken the whole south side.
Your brother, Tom
