Ghost tattoo on the forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A pale blue-grey ghost with two solid dot eyes is the central subject, outlined in heavy black linework and shaded with dark grey areas beneath its folds. Part of a blue crystal with radiating lines and small star marks sits at the lower left, and dark black shapes are partly visible at the top and right edges. The tattoo is photographed close up on a forearm against white paper towel.

Dear Win,

The ghost is back in the greenhouse again, sitting on the upturned seed tray as if it pays rent. Two black dots for eyes and no mouth to speak of, so I've stopped asking it what it wants. Mum always said the dead are only tiresome when they're unfinished, and I suppose that goes for sheets with eyes as much as anyone.

It came the week after we buried Dad's blue glass ball. You remember it, the one he swore could find the hedgehog that ate his tomatoes. I dug it up from under the runner beans to give it a proper send-off, and the sky went that particular greyish green it goes before rain. The ghost drifted out of the shed like laundry off a line. It has been trailing round the cold frames ever since, fluffing the dead heads and frightening the postman.

Yesterday I finally asked it straight. It just folded at the hem, the way a sheet does when nobody is inside it, and pointed at the bare patch by the wall where the sweet peas never took. So I sowed them there and talked to it while I knelt in the wet. By evening there were four green shoots, pale as its own edges.

I haven't told the vicar. Come at Easter and bring your gloves. I think it wants the shed tidied, and I'm not sure I can manage the ladder on my own.

Love, June
