Cat-face ice cream cone on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A mint green ice cream scoop shaped like a cat's face sits on a waffle cone, topped with chocolate sauce dripping down the side and a red cherry on a stem. The cone and scoop have soft shading and speckled detail, with bold black outlines and a pink halo around the outer edge. Red and orange flowers with black linework and a partly visible teal cup fill the rest of the forearm.

The van came up the service road at twenty past six on Thursdays, chiming its tinny tune against the concrete, and by the time it reached Calder House the queue had already gone past the bins. Nadia stood third in line with three pound coins warm in her fist, counting them again though she knew the total. Above her the lift had stopped on the fourteenth floor for the fourth time that week, and somebody was shouting down the shaft about it.

Mr Pell leaned out of the hatch with his cap pushed back. He had a way of making the cat faces that nobody else on the estate could manage: a round scoop of mint, two black dot eyes, a gold nose, whiskers drawn in with the tip of a spoon handle. Chocolate sauce went over the top and ran down the cone as if it had somewhere to be, and he finished each one with a cherry on a green stalk. "Hold it level, Nadia," he said, "or the cat'll have a nervous breakdown."

Halfway along the queue the freezer in the back gave a low cough and went quiet. Pell opened the hatch wider and sniffed the air like a dog. The scoops had begun to slump, the whiskers losing their edges, the mint sliding into a puddle down the waffle. He didn't charge anyone after that. He handed the ruined ones out to kids in their pyjamas, and when it came to Nadia he pulled the cherry off his own stalk and pressed it onto hers. "Tax," he said. "Bad freezers are the council's fault."

She ate it on the bottom step with her back against the cold tiles, sticky to the wrists, watching the windows above come on one floor at a time until the whole block was lit and the van's chimes faded down the hill.
