A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the embers, because I'll only tell this once and my knees have opinions about the cold. You'll have seen the saying carved over the ferry house door at Hollin's Edge. Not all those who wander are lost. Folk say it as if it were a comfort. Old Bessie Corran said it to her son the morning he went up into Ashcombe Wood after the strayed heifers, and he came back three days later with his boots in ribbons and no heifers at all.

The trouble with Ashcombe is that the paths move. Every spring the beeches shift their roots and the track goes where it pleases. Amos swore he walked in a circle past the same split oak nine times. On the ninth pass he saw a feather lying across the path, dark at the quill and violet along the barbs, as if someone had dipped it in bilberry juice. He picked it up. It was warm. Then a flock of small birds rose from the bracken, went off through the trees in a single line, and he followed them without thinking.

They brought him out at the ferry steps by dusk, and he never could say how. He said he'd been lost for three days and found in one hour, and the only difference was that he had stopped trying to get anywhere and let something else choose the way.

He kept that feather in his hatband until the day he died. When his grandson went up the wood looking for his own strays, Amos pressed it into the boy's palm. The birds, mind, are still lifting out of it, if you know where to look. There, against the sky, see? Off you go to bed now.
