Giraffe seahorse hybrid on the ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

A cartoon-style creature combines a giraffe's head, ossicones and ear with a seahorse's curled tail and body, filling the frame from top to bottom. The body is shaded in orange and brown patches with soft gradient shading, while the eye is blue with a dark outline, the muzzle is pink, and the tail is grey-shaded. The design sits on the side of a bare midriff beside a navel piercing, with a patterned waistband visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cake was already leaning when Maureen found me behind the marquee, a paper napkin pinched between two fingers like evidence. 'Nan drew this,' she said. 'Before the seaside job, before Dad was born. It has to go on top, or Pete's mother won't speak to any of us until Christmas.'

The drawing was a giraffe's head with two pencilled ossicones like matchsticks, sitting on a body that tapered and curled at the bottom like something from a rock pool. The ink had gone brown at the edges and someone had dabbed orange paint into the spots. I make sugar work for a living, so I told her the tail wouldn't hold a stick of icing without buckling. 'Then make it hold,' she said, and went off to argue with the florist.

I spent the afternoon wiring a sugar creature in orange and brown patches, painting one eye blue because the nan had clearly run out of grey. The wind off the front kept slapping the marquee flaps and I had to fight the tail every time I turned my back. When Pete's mother arrived, she saw it, sat down hard on a folding chair and said nothing for so long I thought I'd offended her. Then she said, 'She always reckoned a giraffe should have a proper tail to hang on to the world with.'

During the speeches the creature's curl settled round the bottom tier and stayed there. I watched from the kitchen door with a tea towel over my shoulder while Maureen folded the napkin into her handbag, and the sugar beast didn't slide once all evening.
