Cartoon giraffe with large teal eyes
Colour · Photo
A cartoon baby giraffe with oversized teal eyes, small horns and a black-tufted tail, drawn in bold black outlines. The body is filled with yellow and olive shading, with dark spotted patches along the neck and legs. The design is centred on a plain area of skin with a soft pink halo around the outline.

Mind the pot, boy, it's still thinking about the potatoes. Sit on that crate and I'll tell you how the giraffe came aboard the Mary Ellen Oakes, since you've pestered me about it from Gibraltar to the Bay and I'm too old to keep the tale to myself.

She was found in a crate of Valencia oranges, stowed by a dockside lad who wanted a shilling for his trouble. Her eyes were the green of bottle glass and so big she could see the fo'c'sle roof before anybody else could. Two horns like wet pencils poked out of her head, and her tail ended in a black tuft she used to swat flies off my neck while I peeled spuds. Nobody aboard had ever seen a creature so ridiculous, and by the second week the whole crew was feeding her biscuit behind the captain's back.
The trouble started with the spots. Every morning she had one more, dark as tar, creeping down her neck and along her legs like ink soaking into blotting paper. Mr Pilcher swore she had caught the measles off the Spanish, and the carpenter wanted to paint her a sensible brown. I told them to leave her be. A calf that grows its own pattern is only getting ready for somewhere far off, and this ship was never going to be that somewhere.
One evening off Finisterre she stood at the rail, long neck stretched towards the south, while the sea went gold beneath her. I gave her the last orange from my pocket. She ate it slowly, then turned those great teal eyes on me as if to say we had both been fools to think the ocean was a fence. Next morning the rail was empty, and a single dark spot lay on the galley step like a coin she had left me for the oranges.
