Sit closer, the fire wants feeding, and you'll have this one whole or not at all. My gran gave it to me the way I'm giving it to you, and she had it from a man who came up the old river road with a cart of salt. He said there were animals once that grew so tall they could eat from the top of the greenhouse roof, and their necks were longer than the mast of the ferry.

Their necks were the first thing anyone noticed, but he always said the second thing was the spots. Every one was different, like the cracks in a dried pan, and nobody ever counted them the same way twice. The tall one walked at the front of the herd with her head held up over the dust, as if she were reading the weather. The little one walked so close against her side that their two shadows ran together into one long dark stripe across the ground.

One evening the salt man watched the herd come down to the water at the far edge of the flats, where the sun went red and the pans turned to glass. The calf wouldn't drink until the mother lowered her head to him, and then they stood there, neck to neck, while the light drained out of the sky. He said he forgot his own cart for an hour, and when he remembered it, the salt had spilled and the mules had wandered off.

That's the whole of it. Nobody knows where they went when the water came up over the flats, and I won't pretend otherwise. But the salt man swore that on the road home he found a spotted hoof print pressed into the crust, and beside it a smaller one, and the two of them ran off together towards the hills.
