Matching teacup and teapot wrist tattoos

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

The left panel shows two matching wrist tattoos, a teacup on a saucer with steam and a teapot with steam and a small red heart inside its body, drawn in dark outline with light grey shading. The right panel shows a large white heart outlined in black on a forearm, surrounded by loose orange, green, blue, pink and purple washes, beside a smaller heart on a second wrist filled with green, yellow and pink. The image is a two-panel collage, with the left side in black and grey and the right side in full colour.

Dear Wren, the kettle went on Tuesday, so I've been heating water in the cracked pot on the hob, the one with the red glass heart glued into its belly. It tastes of the tank and the steam stings my nose, but I'm drinking it anyway, out of the chipped cup with the saucer that doesn't match.

Harbour Council sent a man round yesterday asking about salvage rights on the old crockery. I told him the set was a family matter and sent him off with a biscuit tin of rainwater and a lie about the damp. He stared at the teapot as if it might bite him. You'd have liked that.

I've decided you should have the teapot. You'll say it's mine, but it was always going to be the two of us drinking from it, the way we did when we were girls and Mum pretended the milk was fresh. Pack the saucer in straw, the cup too. Wrap the heart side outward so nothing scratches the glass.

If the post runs on the Thursday boat, the teapot will be on your table by the first frost. Put the kettle on, Wren. Let the steam go up. I'll know you've done it when the window fogs on this side of the water.
