Mickey Mouse outline on inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline of the head of Mickey Mouse, made of three rounded shapes, sits on the inner wrist. The thin, single black line is clean and even, with no shading inside the shape. The photograph shows the palm and fingers above the tattoo against a dark background, which keeps the focus on the small design.

Sit closer, for the wind off the Ashen Fells does not wait for slow listeners. You want to hear how Brannock Dell chose its seal, and why that seal had three rounds in it and never a straight line.

Old Tamsin the stone-cutter kept one iron pen and a pot of ink made from burnt oak galls. In the wet month of March the Lord of Harrowgate sent for her, because he wanted a mark for his coins that every farmer in the valley would know at a glance. Tamsin took a slate and drew three circles, one large and two small, touching at their edges like a face pressed into wax. Then she drew nothing else. No shading, no fill, only the one thin line round the outside. A thing that is only edged, she said, can be carried anywhere.
The lord grew impatient. He wanted bells and banners and a rampant lion. Tamsin set down her pen and told him the dell had lost its lion in the great flood, and that the round-eared shape was the only one the people still agreed upon. He had it struck anyway, a thousand coins with the three rounds pressed sharp into the silver.
The coins went down the valley and came back up again, worn smooth at the centre, the small ears still crisp. If you ever find one in the mud of the river, turn it over and look at that line. Nobody cuts a thing that fine unless they mean for it to be kept close.
