Lipstick heart and floral belly band tattoos

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The left image shows a heart with a scalloped black outline, filled with pink shading and containing a red-tipped black lipstick and two outlined diamonds with light highlights. The right image shows a band of flowers across the stomach, with a large pink peony at the centre and daisies, pansies and smaller blooms in yellow, peach, teal and navy. Both tattoos use bold black outlines and solid colour, and the images are shown side by side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The queen had sent back the first lipstick twice, once for being too pale and once for being too red, so on the third morning Ysolde Pike sat at the chandler's bench with the hearth gone cold and her fingers stained rose to the knuckle, grinding wax and carmine until the colour agreed with itself. It was the colour of a fire lit in a cold room, and when she tipped it into the brass case the wax gleamed like a struck match.

The court messenger came every Thursday, a boy with a silver whistle on his belt who collected the cases and paid in diamonds from the northern mines, two at a time. Ysolde kept them in a biscuit tin under the bench because she did not trust a setting to hold anything worth keeping. Within a year every lady at court wore the red, and the queen stopped looking into her mirror with a grudge.

In the summer the queen summoned her to the palace. She sat in a hall hung with marigold tapestries and asked whether the colour could be made to last a whole season. Ysolde said it could, if the wearer never ate anything sweet. The queen laughed for the first time that year, and the laugh was an order, so Ysolde walked home through the water meadows, past the pansy borders and the daisies gone to seed along the lane, and understood she would be making lipstick for a woman who did not want it to fade.

That night she emptied the tin onto the kitchen table and did not count them. She picked daisies and pansies from the lane in the dark, threaded them with a needle through a strip of linen, and tied the band around her sister's waist for the wedding, leaving the diamonds where they lay, glittering under the lamp like frost that had nowhere to go.
