The slate in the hall at Marram House had been wiped so often that the grain of the wood showed through the chalk, but Dot Akers still wrote the day's rules on it every morning. This morning it said BREAKFAST TO NINE and nothing else, because the Fenwick boat was late, and everybody in the house had been listening for an engine since before light.

Wren came down at six with her oilskin half buttoned and her brother's thermos under one arm. She didn't sit. She filled the thermos from the big brown pot, then stood at the window with her back to the kitchen. "Dad would have been out by now," she said. "He'd have had the lamp lit and the whole harbour shouting." "Your dad went out in weather like this for forty years," Dot said. "He'd tell you he was never once frightened." "He'd tell you a lot of things." The wind came round the gable and rattled the sash.

At half eleven the Fenwick boat came round the point on one engine, low in the water, and Wren was out of the door before anyone could stop her. Dot watched from the step as her niece ran down the shingle, shouted at the men on the quay, and took the rope from the boy who'd been failing to throw it for a quarter of an hour. Tom Fenwick climbed onto the stones grinning like a fool, his cap gone and one hand bleeding.

Back in the kitchen, Wren dripped on the flags and drank the cold tea without complaint. Dot took the chalk from the drawer, rubbed out the rules, and wrote on the clean slate: GIRL ALMIGHTY. "That's me, is it?" Wren said. "That's the one who went out in a boat that wasn't hers." Dot underlined it twice, then added a second line beneath, smaller and crooked, and stood back so the girl could read it: SHE'S NOT AFRAID.
