Two arms pressed together in black and grey, one with fine line lettering reading GIRL ALMIGHTY on the forearm and one with SHE'S NOT AFRAID on the upper arm.

Girl Almighty and She's Not Afraid text tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are pressed together, each carrying a short line of text in thin, hand-drawn style capitals. The left forearm reads GIRL ALMIGHTY and the right arm reads SHE'S NOT AFRAID in a stacked, staggered layout. The linework is fine and even, shown in black ink on pale skin with soft grey tones in the background, and the composition is tightly framed on the two lettered areas.

Dear Ada,

The mate says we will raise the Azores by Thursday, though he said the same thing on Sunday and we have been staring at the same grey swell ever since. I am writing at the galley table with the lamp swinging, so forgive the wobble. Cook says I write like a drunk, and he may be right, but I have had nothing stronger than tea since Liverpool.

Mother will have told you about the bet I lost. Mr Tully reckoned no lass could sit a full watch in the forepeak without going green, and I told him a girl almighty could manage anything a man could, and then I had to prove it. I did the watch. I was sick twice over the rail and never once in front of him, which I count as a win. Do not tell Mother the rest.

The storm on Tuesday was the worst I have seen. The cargo shifted off the Bay and we spent eleven hours wedged in the saloon with the crockery flying. Mrs Pryce, the stewardess, sat with her rosary in one fist and a bread knife in the other, and when a crate of lamp oil split she only said, "Well, that's the stove sorted for the winter." I kept picturing you on the kitchen step with your chin on your knees, and I wanted to tell you that you are not to be afraid of anything while I am gone, because I am not.

Keep the lettering I gave you in Prince Street, the one that made you cry and swear at the parlour man. Ma said it would wash off. It will not. When I am home I will show you the words on my own arm, faded now to a smudge, and you can laugh at me properly.

Your loving sister, Nell
