Girl Power lettering with hearts on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of the inside of a wrist showing the words Girl Power in a thin, handwritten script with an outline heart on each side. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink appears as a single dark blue tone. The tattoo sits centred in the frame against a pale tiled background, and the image has a soft, slightly filtered look.

By then he had moved on to the Tudors and the back row had gone quiet in the way that meant someone was about to get caught. I took the pen anyway. We had a dare to answer.

The boys at the bus shelter had been chalking Priya's name beside a word we wouldn't write down, and they'd done it every afternoon that week. Nobody had thought to stop them. So on Thursday, with the rain coming sideways across the car park, Nell crouched under the perspex roof and drew two small hearts first, then GIRL POWER, the letters leaning like they were tired of standing up straight. She pressed hard enough to dent the paper underneath.
The bus came. The rain blurred the ink and it ran a little at the edges, the way biro does, and the boys laughed until Priya walked over and stood between them and the bench with her arms folded. She said nothing at all. They found somewhere else to be after that. The writing lasted three weeks, and whenever a teacher asked about it the answer was a maths project, which nobody believed.
Thirty years on, the shelter is gone and the boys are dads or dead. Priya runs a firm of solicitors in Bradford. I still have the exercise book, the page soft and crinkled, and the blue hearts are still there, slightly crooked, exactly where Nell left them.
