Stethoscope heart on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a stethoscope curved into a heart shape, with the earpieces at the top and the chest piece hanging below on a looping tube. The linework is thin and even with solid black fill on the tubing, and the tattoo sits on pale skin against a blurred background. The composition is centred on the wrist, with the hand cropped at the bottom of the frame.

The chart said Mrs Okonedo had refused the morphine twice, so when the ward clock crept past three I took the long way round to bay six, past the sluice and the squeaking trolley of clean linen. Nobody else was awake except the drip stands, which hummed to themselves like old men at a bus stop. I found her sitting up with her knees pulled in, looking at the window as if the car park might explain something.

She didn't ask me to sit. I sat anyway, on the wobbly stool that always leans towards the bed. I took her wrist, which was the first thing my hand knew how to do before it knew anything else, and I laid the chest piece of my stethoscope against the blue vein where the pulse runs thin. Her heart went quick and then slow, quick and then slow, the way a kettle does before it settles into a boil. I told her what I always tell them, that a heart is just a pump with opinions, and she laughed through her nose, which was more than I'd managed all shift.

She turned her wrist over afterwards and showed me the little ink shape there, a heart made out of my own kit, the earpieces forming the top curves. Her daughter had it done the week before the operation, she said, because she wanted something to look at that wasn't a monitor. I told her it was a good design, and it was, the lines were so fine you could almost hear them. Then I checked her line, wrote up the obs, and left her listening to the window.
