Glass of male tears on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A simple outline drawing of a tumbler, partly filled to a horizontal line, sits above the words MALE TEARS set in spaced capital letters. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading, and the design is centred on the skin of the upper thigh.

Log, Tuesday. Wind south-westerly, force six and rising. The Mary Ellen still not in, and the wives have been at the window since four. Dot put the tumbler on the bar before anyone asked, the one with the chip in its rim, and filled it to the pencil line she scratched on the inside in 1979. Nobody in Skerrow calls it a joke any more. They just look at it and look away.

Mostly it sits on the shelf above the optics, dry, collecting dust. The men who come in off the boats are not the weeping kind, Dot will tell you, and she has lied to a great many of them about it. But the tumbler catches the lamplight in a way that makes people honest. Ray Pottle, who had not cried since his mother's funeral, sat under it the night the Ada went out of the harbour and talked for an hour about nothing at all, the price of diesel, a dog he once had. When he left he didn't say a word, and neither did she.

The new lad, Kenny, asked this morning what it was for. She told him it was a tide mark. Whatever goes in fills it to the line, and then the tide goes out and it's empty again, and that's how you know a place is still working.

At six she poured the glass out onto the geraniums in the window box. Tomorrow it will be full again or it won't, and either way the geraniums are the best on the street.
