We're all mad here lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a line of lowercase black serif lettering reading "we're all mad here" across the inner forearm. The letterforms are solid and evenly weighted, with clean edges and no shading. The ink is black on pale skin, and the plain background is dark, so the text sits clearly in the centre of the frame.

The snow had closed the pass for nine days when the stranger came down the track on a grey mule, and Hanne Mollen put another log on the fire without asking his business. The stranger sat by the hearth and ate her barley broth with great care, as if each spoonful were a debt he meant to repay. He asked for the room under the eaves. He asked whether the cat in the kitchen had a name. Hanne said it was called Cat. He nodded as though that settled a matter of law.

On the tenth night he said the whole valley was mad to stay up here through the thaw. Hanne laughed and agreed with him. He said no, madness was the only sensible thing left in a season like this, and that was why they were all mad here, every last one of them, the miller, the priest, the widow who kept goats. She told him he was talking nonsense. He smiled and asked her to fetch the ledger.

In the morning the pass was clear and the mule was gone, and so was the stranger. In the ledger, beside her husband's last entry, someone had written in a neat black hand that the broth was paid for, the room was paid for, and the debts of the house were forgiven by a fellow lunatic. Hanne sat with the book open until the cat climbed into her lap and began, very solemnly, to purr.
