Globe and airplane with flight paths on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of a globe showing continents in green and blue, with a pink airplane above it and dashed flight routes looping around it. Loose orange and pink washes and thin black linework frame the globe, and a partly visible object sits at the lower right edge. The tattoo is shown on a lower leg below a grey shorts hem against a plain wall and wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, and mind the suitcase by the door, it has opinions and it likes a draught. You want the story of the globe above the bakery on Lantern Street? Then hush, because the city is asleep and only bakers and bus drivers are awake to hear it. Old Osei Mensah kept that globe above his ovens for thirty years. Its blue had gone soft as flour dust, and the green of its countries had faded at the edges, but every night at closing he gave it one slow turn with the flat of his hand.

His nephew Kwame used to sit on the flour sacks and watch it go round. "Where does that line go?" he asked, pointing at a dashed route that nobody had painted there. Osei laughed and said the line was a promise, drawn in pink by an aeroplane that crosses the rooftops after midnight, if you are awake enough to see it.

Kwame grew up and took the night flights out of Stansted with a rucksack and no return ticket. Postcards came from Lima, from Perth, from a town in Newfoundland with one bar and a dog. Every card had the same question on the back in careful capitals: DID THE GLOBE STILL TURN? Osei answered each one with a single word, YES, and pinned it to the wall.

The last card came in spring with no stamp. It held only a pink aeroplane drawn in biro and a dashed line that looped back over the sea and the cranes and the river, until it stopped at the bakery door. That night Osei gave the globe its turn, and his thumb came to rest on Lantern Street as if someone had just stepped off the bus. Now go home, and if you see a pink light crossing over the chimneys, don't wave. Just follow it.
