Watercolour world map on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a world map with black outlines around the continents, filled with blurred washes of pink, purple, blue and teal. Fine dots and speckles trail from the continents, and two small teal hearts sit to the right of Africa. The design runs horizontally across the forearm against a grey textured wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie Penhale had tinted maps for the Halifax Atlas Works for thirty-one years, and she knew the sound a brush made when it was loaded too wet. On the morning the new order came in, the foreman set a proof on her bench, a world with its coastlines inked in black, and told her the buyers wanted it washed in colours nobody had asked for before. Pink for the Americas, she thought. Violet for the north. Something cold for the sea.

She worked through the week with the window open to the smell of wet slate. Her nephew Tom, home from the trawlers, sat on the stool by the paper rack and counted the blots she made. Every time she lifted a brush she flicked a fine spray off the tip, and the foreman scolded her until she explained that the ink wanted to travel. Africa she coloured teal, the shade of her mother's bathroom tiles. Beside it, almost without deciding, she dabbed two small hearts, one bigger than the other.

The proof went to London and came back three months later in a parcel with a letter from a navigator who had carried one of those maps across the Atlantic in a waxed tin. He wrote that the hearts had kept him company in a fog off Newfoundland, and that he had steered toward them as if they were lamps on a harbour wall.

Marjorie read it twice, then folded it into her apron pocket. Tom asked what the hearts were for. She tapped the damp ink on the next sheet and said nothing, because the colour was still drying and she had learned long ago not to speak over paint.
