Paper plane orbiting a globe

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A watercolour-style globe shows blue oceans and green and yellow landmasses, with a white paper plane flying across its surface. A dashed flight path loops around the globe, and the soft blended shading gives the design a painted look.

Old Tobiah kept a stall of maps at the back of the covered market, where the rain drummed on the tin roof and the gutters ran over the cobbles. He sold charts of rivers nobody had sailed and atlases with the countries gone pale from sun. Every morning he folded one sheet into a paper plane and set it on the windowsill, because his daughter had asked him to, and because his hands needed something to do while the customers hurried past.

One wet Thursday a girl called Nell came in with a coin wrapped in a handkerchief. She wanted a map of the whole world, she said, the kind with no edges. Tobiah told her such a thing did not exist, that the globe was round and paper was flat, and the two would never agree. She looked at the plane on the sill and said that paper could be anything if you let it go.

Tobiah laughed, then did not. He took the plane, creased its wings flat, and handed it to her. She walked out into the rain and threw it over the rooftops towards the harbour. It climbed, looped once around the church spire, then turned south and was gone.

Years later a postcard arrived at the stall, damp and creased, with a picture of the sea and a single line in pencil: I have been round the back of the world, and it is blue all the way down. Tobiah pinned it above the till and kept selling maps.
