One evening, when the light had gone the colour of weak tea, her grandfather called her down from the highest rung and held out a thing he had found in the grass by the wall. It was a round wooden toy, no bigger than a walnut, painted blue and green and rubbed nearly smooth. Half the paint had worn off the lands. The seas still showed. He said a travelling man had given it to his own father for mending a cart, and that it was meant to be turned slowly so the far countries came round to the front in turn.

Nell turned it with her thumb. Ireland came round, then a long brown stretch with no name, then a small blue hole where the sea had been picked clean. She asked where the man had gone. Her grandfather shrugged and said the world was big enough that nobody had to be in the same place twice, if they did not mind the walking.

She kept the toy in her apron pocket for the rest of the harvest. When the last basket was carried down, she climbed the old pear, which had never once borne fruit, and set the wooden world in its fork where the wind could turn it. By morning it had moved a quarter round, and she was content to leave it there.
