Globe with city skyline tattoo

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A globe sits on a stand with a cityscape inside it, showing tall buildings on the left, a large arch in the centre and a rising sun with rays on the right. Fine outlines and dense shading define the globe, buildings and arch, with light hatching across the sky and ground. The design is in black and grey ink and fills a circular composition on the skin.

You will laugh, because you always said I could not draw a straight line with a ruler. But I drew the arch from memory of the one at the end of Cutter Street, the one Father walked us under on Sundays, and I gave it the sun behind it because the sun always rose behind it in my head. The tall houses on the left are the ones from the warehouse row, with the chimney that leans. The birds are gulls, because gulls follow anything that sails.

Yesterday the mate asked which city it was. I told him it was the one I left. He said there was no such place on any chart, and I said that was exactly why I had to make it myself. Then he took his pipe up on deck, and I sat a long while watching the lamp shine through the thin ocean of the globe, where the arch glowed as if it was waiting for someone to come home through it.
